I also remember buying a pair of 15" Optimus woofers for a decent price and built a terrible, extremely undersized box for them for my first car (a 1980 Mercury Capri hatchback I was handed down from my older sister - a fine example of how terribly American car companies were still building them apparently still oblivious of the higher quality and lower priced mostly Japanese imports that were taking over under their noses - but I digress). I was 13 so like in 7th grade probably (but that was a long time ago now) and I can still somewhat remember the Radio Shack store in my local mall in Northern Virginia as a place that actually had a decent variety of electronics and a good assortment of electronic parts. Just for fun, I also stumbled across this Radio Shack catalog someone has generously scanned and uploaded at some point. I'm attempting to upload a pic of that ad below in case the link doesn't work. That price is pretty low but that was 2000 but mine say they were built in Malaysia for Radio Shack so just prior to the Chinese taking over pretty much everything. Looks like they're the ones in the middle for $79 though I can't see any model number. The picture quality is lacking, obviously, but you can still make it out the most part. I came across this old Radio Shack ad from 2000 when doing a search for these 40-5017's as Radio Shack speakers. ![]() Thanks again guys for the info, if you're out there somewhere. I'd like to have a little wall of speakers going there in between two sets of shelves I built and this is a decent start. I finally live in a single family house so I can get away with more volume, at least when the wife and kids aren't here. I plan to get a decent but not great receiver on the cheap to blast out there. These RCA's are just going to be in my garage shop/man space for when I'm working out or doing some ill-advised wood working project. The cabinets are in bad shape and they're not great speakers to begin with. This is a good pair to replace a crappy pair of Fisher STV-876 I bought from a local guy for $40. I'm no audiophile but I love good speakers especially older ones. ![]() Not sure if you two are still around but I appreciate the info anyway. The woofers look brand new as do the mids and tweeters. ![]() Other than that, they're in just about perfect shape. The cabinets are just barely knicked in a few places and one of the cloth grills has a tiny hole. I just bought a pair from Goodwill for $16! They're in really good shape. I know this is a very OLD thread but I thought I'd get in on it for grins since there's not much else out there for these RCA 40-5017 speakers.
